Alpaca Nutrition: A Practical Guide to Healthy Feeding

Feeding is one most important considerations for most Alpaca keepers. There is a wide range of products currently available on the market and choosing a feed that genuinely meets the needs of your animals can feel overwhelming. Vitality Alpaca Mix provides a balanced, reliable nutrition to support a happy, healthy animal.

Protein, Energy & Fibre

The focus is simple: to provide balanced, reliable nutrition that supports alpaca health while giving owners complete peace of mind.

Protein

Protein is important for:

  • Muscle development
  • Pregnancy and lactation
  • Fibre growth
  • Immune health

Adult maintenance alpacas usually require moderate protein levels, while growing cria, pregnant females, and lactating mothers need more. Too much protein can contribute to excessive weight gain or urinary problems, so balance is important.

Energy

Energy comes mainly from carbohydrates in forage and supplemental feeds. Alpacas generally require less concentrated energy than many farm animals.

Energy demands increase during:

  • Cold weather
  • Pregnancy
  • Lactation
  • Growth
  • Heavy fibre production

Underfeeding energy can lead to weight loss and poor fleece quality, while overfeeding may result in obesity.

Fibre

Fibre is the foundation of the alpaca diet, high-fibre forage supports healthy digestion.

Sources of fibre include:

  • Pasture grass
  • Grass hay
  • Mixed grass-legume hay
  • Limited browse vegetation

Most alpacas should receive constant access to forage throughout the day.

Vitamins and Minerals

Alpacas need access to essential vitamins and minerals, including:

  • Calcium
  • Phosphorus
  • Magnesium
  • Selenium
  • Zinc
  • Copper
  • Vitamin D
  • Vitamin E

Vitality Alpaca Mix supplies a full and balanced complement of vitamins and minerals. Particular attention has been paid to vitamin provision, including species-appropriate vitamin D levels, helping to reduce the need for additional supplementation or drenching with vitamin pastes.

The balance of minerals means there is no reliance on ammonium chloride—an ingredient more commonly associated with intensively fed lambs rather than alpacas. Highly bioavailable sources of copper and Zinc are included to support overall health, fertility and fibre quality.

Strong breeding performance and the growth of a healthy, high-quality fleece are paramount, whether your animals are kept for enjoyment, breeding, or the show ring.

Choosing the Right Alpaca Feed

Vitality Alpaca Mix is formulated to high nutritional standards, using carefully selected ingredients sourced with quality, traceability and environmental responsibility in mind. All raw materials are routinely analysed, and we deliberately avoid ingredients linked to global deforestation, including soya and palm products.

Feed rate is typically at 100–300g per head per day, depending on condition, age and life stage. At these rates, the ration supplies a full and balanced complement of vitamins and minerals.
