Poultry require good sources of energy all year round to maintain good health and feather condition. Laying birds still require adequate protein from a layers pellet or meal for egg production, so do not look to reduce this too much.
Poultry are homeothermic meaning they need to keep their body temperature stable. Cold weather increases the energy required to do this. They generally have less access to pasture or insects during the winter, so rely more on the feed supplied. Without the extra energy birds may lose weight and condition, affecting egg production and overall health.
Fats and Oils are good sources of energy, much the same as you would feed the smaller birds in the garden during the winter. A mixed poultry corn is always a good addition, high in energy and carbohydrates. Provided by the cereals, particularly maize and sunflower seeds.
